Earlier this Monday July 10th, Jonas Warmuth, PhD candidate at the Structural Xploration Lab, was awarded an Hangai Prize by the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures. Every year, the Hangai Prize is given to talented young researchers, designers, and engineers working in the field of shell and spatial structures, after peer-review selection of the best conference papers submitted to the symposium. This prize recognizes the quality of the early developments of Jonas' doctoral work on "Computational Conceptual Design - Typological Exploration of Spatial Truss Systems through Optimization", which breaks through current limitations that designers face when conceptualizing new structures. The paper is co-authored with his PhD co-supervisor Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto (TU Munich) and his PhD supervisor Prof. Corentin Fivet (SXL, EPFL). Prior to receiving the medal and certificate, Jonas was invited to give a plenary lecture to the audience of the IASS 2023 Symposium, in Melbourne, Australia.
Xavier Estrella, Postdoctoral researcher at the Structural Xploration Lab is also attending the IASS 2023 Symposium. He is presenting an "Experimental investigation on the bending response of reuse-ready slabs - The Pixel Slab System", a paper co-authored with Johnny Siriani, former master student at EPFL, and Corentin Fivet (SXL, EPFL).
