EPFL Professor Jeremy Luterbacher has been honored with the 2025 Green & Sustainable Chemistry Award by the Swiss Chemical Society for his groundbreaking work on depolymerizing lignin from biomass.

The Green & Sustainable Chemistry Award, established in 2020 by the Swiss Chemical Society (SCS) in collaboration with Syngenta and SusChem Switzerland, celebrates young academic investigators under 45 who contribute to sustainable chemical methodologies and technologies. The award acknowledges significant scientific advancements that align with green chemistry principles and sustainable innovation.

This year, the Green & Sustainable Chemistry Award has been awarded to Professor Jeremy Luterbacher, head of the Laboratory of Sustainable and Catalytic Processing (LPDC).

Luterbacher is being recognized for his pioneering technology for depolymerizing lignin, a key structural component of plant biomass. His work opens new pathways for converting biomass into valuable chemicals and fuels, driving sustainable innovations in bioenergy and materials science.

The SCS citation reads: “Prof. Jeremy Luterbacher… receives the prize for his development of an innovative technology towards depolymerizing lignin from biomass.”
