ESO Research Team Wins Best Paper Award in the ISPRS Open Journal for 2023 qualifying them to compete for a €10,000 grant as part of the Fritz Ackermann Award.

The paper titled "Model-based constraints for trajectory determination of quad-copters: Design, calibration & merits for direct orientation" authored by ESO researchers Kenneth Joseph Paul, Davide Antonio Cucci, and Jan Skaloud has been selected as the best publication in the ISPRS Open Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing for the year 2023.

The jury recognized the innovative approach taken by the authors to enhance direct georeferencing of quadcopters. By incorporating model-based constraints or a Vehicle Dynamic Model, the researchers demonstrated how an expensive Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) could be replaced with a small, low-cost IMU already integrated into the UAV's autopilot. Monte Carlo simulations confirmed the approach's feasibility and highlighted its potential to significantly reduce the costs associated with UAV-based laser scanning systems.

The ISPRS Open Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (IOJPRS) is an esteemed journal of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS). It serves as a vital communication platform for scientists and professionals worldwide who work in various disciplines utilizing photogrammetry, remote sensing, spatial information systems, computer vision, and related fields. The Journal is a key reference and archive for advancements in these areas.

The award-winning paper is now qualified to compete for the newly established ISPRS Fritz Ackermann Award, which honors the best paper published in the ISPRS Open Journal during a specified period. The first award will cover the five-year period from 2021 to 2025. Winners of the ISPRS Fritz Ackermann Award will receive a certificate and a grant of €10,000. The award aims to encourage the submission of high-quality scientific papers, promote the Journal, and honor the outstanding contributions of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Friedrich (Fritz) Ackermann to research and development in photogrammetry and remote sensing.
