IPHYS: one Institute for the physicists of EPFL

© 2016 EPFL
Since the 1st of January 2016, physics research at the School of Basic Sciences, EPFL, is organized into a single Institute, the Institute of Physics (IPHYS) directed by Prof. Benoit Deveaud.
The former Institute of Condensed Matter Physics, Institute of Physics of Energy and Particles, Institute of the Physics of Biological Systems and Institute of Theoretical Physics have therefore merged into one Institute of Physics (IPHYS).
This new institute brings together the physics laboratories of the Faculty of Basic Sciences, which will share a well-equipped infrastructure of platforms that are essential to the research activities. The institute will also build upon close collaborations with several Centers, such as the Swiss Plasma Center, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Electron Microscopy, the Center for Biomedical Imaging and the Max Planck-EPFL Center for Molecular Nanosciences and Technology.
The activities of the Institute of Physics cover a wide spectrum of domains in physics, both theoretical and experimental, ranging from the infinitely small to the infinitely large in time, space and energy.
We are convinced that this fusion will strengthen and streamline physics research at EPFL and contribute to its international exposure.
