eCAADe + SIGRADI conference, Septembre 9-13, 2019, University of Porto (FAUP)

Ioannis Mirtsopoulos is one of the recipients of the eCAADe grant for young PhD researchers, working within the wide field of computational technologies in architecture. The grant is offered to selected PhD researchers from Europe, South America and the eCAADe hosting country. Young PhD researchers are selected to attend the pre-conference PhD workshop in Porto, on September 10th, where they will present their work and discuss with experienced colleagues its value and potential in the field of computer-aided architectural design.

Ioannis will present his work on “Grammar-based structural design explorations”, which addresses the problematic of design exploration and/or design fixation during early design stages. His research is framed around force-driven grammar rules, for generative, conceptual design of spatial trusses, in an interactive way. Their successive application within an algorithmic framework operates as a form-finding-engine, capable of generating numerous design candidates in static equilibrium within a given design domain. Broadly speaking, his thesis addresses specific new challenges and emerging issues of architectural and design computing.
