The ICE lab continues to lead the way in research on human-centric buildings for a changing climate. Our team, including Prof. Dolaana Khovalyg and Dr. Kun Lyu, recently attended a significant international event - the first meeting of HCB Network / IEA EBC Annex 95 in Seville, Spain.

The inaugural meeting of the Human-Centric Buildings (HCB) Network, part of the IEA EBC Annex 95, brought together over 100 leading researchers from 28 countries to address the challenges posed by climate change in the built environment.

Representing ICE, Prof. Khovalyg and Dr. Lyu actively contributed to brainstorming sessions and discussions on innovative research activities. The HCB Network emphasizes a people-first approach, integrating occupant behavior, design strategies, and energy technologies to create buildings that are climate-resilient, energy-efficient, and comfortable for occupants. During the meeting, we collaborated on ideas that align with the network’s core objectives, including:

  • Designing buildings adaptable to climate scenarios.
  • Integrating occupant behavior into energy and comfort optimization.
  • Fostering equity by ensuring sustainable buildings are accessible to all.

ICE lab’s contributions focused on the intersection of thermal comfort, extreme climate adaptation, and occupant-centric building designs. These discussions laid the groundwork for meaningful collaborations across multidisciplinary teams and reinforced the importance of equity and diversity in addressing global and regional challenges in building resilience.
