A Paper co-written by Pr. Emmanuel Abbé (EPFL, MDS), Pr. Samy Bengio (Apple), Aryo Lofti (EPFL, MDS) and Kevin Rizk (EPFL) has been awarded the ICML Outstanding Paper Award 2023

The International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) is one of the two most important conference in the field of machine learning. Every year, they award a prize to a few select publications in the field. This year, out of the more than six thousand submissions, one of the six that was awarded the prize is the paperGeneralization on the Unseen, Logic Reasoning and Degree Curriculum, by Pr. Emmanuel Abbé (EPFL, MDS), Pr. Samy Bengio (Apple), Aryo Lofti (EPFL, MDS) and Kevin Rizk (EPFL).

The paper develops a new mathematical framework to characterize reasoning capabilities of certain neural networks architectures with the Generalization on the Unseen (GOTU) framework. It further shows that the theory matches well with experiments done on Transformers.
