On May 3, 2011, Pierre J. Magistretti, director of the Brain Mind Institute, EPFL, of the Center for Psychiatric Neurosciences, UNIL-CHUV, and of the NCCR “SYNAPSY, the synaptic bases of mental diseases”, was awarded the Camillo Golgi Medal Award, given by the Golgi Foundation in Brescia, in recognition of his contributions to the field of neuroscience. The second recipient was Francesca Merzagora, Founder and President of O.N.Da, National Observatory on Women’s Health.

The Prize, established in 2006 by the Golgi Foundation to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize awarded to Golgi, a native of the Brescia region, is attributed once a year to a neuroscientist and to an institution active in public health.

Previous recipients include Paul Greengard, Rockefeller University and Nobel laureate in 2000, Cristina Alberini, Professor at Mount Sinai Medical School and a close associate to Nobel laureate Eric Kandel, the American Society of Neuroscience and Enrico Garaci, president of the Instituto Superiore di Sanità.

The Golgi Foundation was established in Brescia in 1987 to support research in biomedicine and public health. It has supported projects with an emphasis on biomedical technology for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, in particular in child and women health.
