Organized by the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), the Master of Advanced Studies in Urbanism offers a high-level postgraduate education covering the theoretical and practical dimensions of the discipline. Experts from several disciplines were invited to give a talk in this context. Among them, Prof. Emmanuel Rey, head of the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST), whose intervention focused on issues related to the generation of new urban polarities.

The Master of Advanced Studies in Urbanism (MAS) aims at reviewing the contemporary concepts and precepts of urbanism, as well as the use of digital tools for planning, project practice or operationalization. The training also addresses implementation of land-related strategies, financial arrangements, activation of legal tools or implementation of a local public action.

In his presentation entitled "Générer de nouvelles polarités urbaines", Prof. Emmanuel Rey detailed numerous components of the project complexity, based on a concrete example and grouping them into three main categories: spatiality and sustainability, temporality and processes, organization and governance.

In order to consistently integrate multiple sectorial logics into the project, he particularly emphasized the need to define clear architectural concepts and strong guidelines, as well as to provide targeted flexibility to respond to evolutions, obstacles and opportunities.
