Prof. de Rassenfosse has delivered a presentation on the role of patents in the financing of innovation to an audience of policy makers at the WTO in Geneva on June 9th, 2015. The event was organized by the European Union, the United States and the Swiss delegations.
Prof. de Rassenfosse explained the economic problems associated with the financing of innovation and discussed ways in which patents can help alleviate some of these problems. He explained that patents can be used either to increase the internal capital of a company (through monopoly prices and by leveraging the IP asset on markets for technology) or to lower the cost of external capital (by acting as a signal of quality to the provider of funds and by being offered as collateral). The audience included policy makers from across the globe.
The other keynote speakers were: Dr Roman Léandre Vuille, former head of the Nestlé IP Department; Frank Gerritzen, CEO of Careerplus Group SA; and Dr Giampiero de Luca, Head of IP at Waypoint Capital.
