Field study and lecture of the role of architectural design
Yunjoung (Yunni) Cho has undertaken a field study hosted by TU Wien (Technical University of Vienna, Austria) in collaboration with 2nd Department of Psychiatry at Hietzing Clinic in Vienna from June to August 2024.
This study was undertaken as part of Yunni's ongoing research into the role of achitectural design in enhancing therapeutic environments in psychiatric care settings, with particular emphasis on the influence of nature-intergrated design on mental well-being.Throughhout this study, Yunni collaborated with faculty and researchers at TU wien, especially at the Research Department for Digital Architecture and Planning, utilizing our facilities to deepen her investigation into therapeutic spaces in healthcare. The study involved observational analyses and interviews at the 2nd Department for Psychiatry at Hietzing Clinic to gather data on patient interactions with garden and outdoor designs of psychiatric facilities. These insights are essential to Yunni's research, which examines the intersection of architectural history and modern healthcare design practices, especially in creating environments that support mental health recovery.
The results of this field study have furthered our collective understanding of how design elements can impact patient outcomes in psychiatric settings. In recognition of the value of her work, Yunni has been invited to present a guest lecture at TU Wien on November 15h, 2024, where she shared her findings and discussed the braoder implications of therapeutic design in urban planning and healthcare architecture. (Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Michael U. Hensel, PhD, TU Wien)
Yunni had also the opportunity to present in a guest lecture the findngs of her research at Klinik Hietzing on November 18th, 2024 to an audience of doctors, architects, healthcare professionals, hospital management, cultural advocates and public organizations. She underscored the transformative role of therapeutic design in enhancing mental health and advancing innovative, patient-centered approaches to healthcare design. These findings offer valuable guidance for incorporating therapeutic design principles into psychiatric care.
