Appu Shaji, IC alumni who founded the startup Sight.IO, sold it to EyeEm.

Berlin-based photo-sharing platform EyeEm has acquired Sight.io, a spin-off from the Image and Visual Representation Group IVRG at the EPFL, founded by Appu Shaji in 2012. Sight.IO's photo ranking engine automatically sorts photographs on the basis of their aesthetic beauty and composition. Its technology, which involves a combination of computer vision and machine learning techniques, was already well-known in its field and was even attracting the attention of larger players.

EyeEm, based in Berlin, is a community and marketplace for a new generation of photographers. Over 10 million people are using EyeEm to capture, enhance, share and discover images, to meet people and improve their skills.
