EPFL and Princeton University are proud to announce a new exchange partnership starting this year. The new agreement was established by EPFL’s Education Outreach Department (SPE) in collaboration with Princeton’s Office of International Programs.

At EPFL, offering outstanding academic and life experiences to our students has always been a top priority. With close to 150 top exchange options, we now focus on adding value to our portfolio through targeted partnerships with leading universities. When Princeton University approached us to explore collaboration, the timing was perfect. We are excited to launch this new study abroad opportunity and create strong links with first rate partners!

To gain insight on the vision and expectations of this new partnership, we spoke with Jordan Zilla, Assistant Director of Study Abroad Programs at Princeton University, during her visit at EPFL, and Inès Duranton, a second-year EPFL Bachelor student in Microengineering who will be the first to benefit from this program.

What inspired the creation of this new exchange partnership between EPFL and Princeton University?

Jordan Zilla: Developing new academic collaborations is a strategic process. First, we consider demand—Is there departments we need to better serve with exchange options, such as specific engineering disciplines? Second, faculty interest is essential, partnerships often grow from professors seeking opportunities for their students to collaborate with institutions.

Princeton had a strong interest in reconnecting with a French-speaking university offering strong engineering programs. Given EPFL’s international renowned reputation, and our existing ties in Switzerland through ETHZ, it was a natural fit for Princeton.

What excites you most about this new partnership?

JZ: For Princeton students coming to EPFL, this is an incredible opportunity to engage with EPFL’s cutting-edge engineering curriculum and to connect with European academic and research networks. There’s a growing demand for international engineering experiences, and this partnership directly addresses that need.

Inès Duranton: Princeton offers rigorous courses that align with my current studies at EPFL, plus a unique blend of technical and societal focus. I am excited to discover and experience the liberal arts environment that goes beyond the technical training and apply theoretical concepts to real-world problems. Also, it is the chance to improve my English skills, immerse myself in a different academic culture, and experience campus life of a prestigious Ivy League institution.

What does it take to be a great engineer?

JZ: A great engineer is not defined just by technical expertise, but also by empathy and a broad, interdisciplinary perspective. At Princeton, the liberal arts model encourages students to combine scientific knowledge with insights from the humanities and social sciences. This approach fosters professionals who think critically about the societal and ethical impact of their work.

ID: This exchange will help me develop a global mindset and become a more adaptable engineer by building international experience through intercultural communication, group projects, and interdisciplinary work. With these experiences I hope to learn how to tackle challenges at the intersection of technology and society effectively.

Princeton and EPFL both have very strong student organization culture, providing all students with opportunities to put their ideas into action! Raising the question: Do extracurricular activities truly add value to the curriculum - and if so, in what ways?

JZ: Absolutely. Extracurriculars are a core part of Princeton’s social fabric. They enhance communication, teamwork, and personal development. They also offer students a way to unwind, recharge, and make the most of their time on campus by building friendships and exploring new interests.

ID: Yes! Extracurriculars complement academics by building leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. They are also a great way to relax, try new activities, and meet inspiring people.

This partnership, built on shared and complementary strengths of both institutions, will offer students the opportunity to explore diverse educational landscapes and foster cross-cultural understanding while engaging with deep scholarly familiarity. It gives access to an exceptional educational experience that prepares them for the demands of a rapidly evolving world.
