On June 23, faculty members, researchers and students gathered at the SwissTech Conventions Center for the first EPFL AI4Science Day event. A unique opportunity for them to discuss machine learning applications in science and engineering.

Since its creation in December 2021, the AI4Science initiative led by a committee of EPFL professors and reseach staff, hosted by the Center for Intelligent Systems (CIS) aims to promote the application of Machine Learning approaches to Science and Engineering problems. In completion to regular research meetings on campus the AI4Science postdoc fellowship program has been put in place. Indeed, in just ten years, Machine Learning has profoundly transformed fields where data can be easily collected and used to discover complex patterns and relationships that would otherwise escape the human mind. This new way of reasoning will assist domain scientists and engineers in developing new research questions and searching for answers and solutions to problems that we are currently unable to solve.

The AI4Science Day re-created the atmosphere of a conference with talks and poster sessions where participants get ample feedback on their work and have plenty of networking opportunities. Looking at the photographs of the poster sessions, students and young researchers who were particularly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic seemed to enjoy being back together.
