Professor Giovanni De Micheli, who is leading the Laboratory of Integrated Systems, was awarded the European Design and Automation Association’s (EDAA) Lifetime Achievement Award 2016 in Dresden, Germany.

Giovanni De Micheli was recognised for being a global research leader in the area of electronic design automation and specifically in the synthesis of digital circuits. His pivotal contributions to modeling languages, logic and high-level synthesis were also celebrated. “He has been an outstanding researcher and educator for the past 30 years and has received a large number of recognitions for his achievements,” states the EDAA press release.

Synthesis and Optimization of Digital Circuits, the main text and reference book for logic synthesis adopted by many universities, is among Professor De Micheli’s many accomplishments. He has not only contributed to the foundation of computer-aided hardware and software co-design - as a discipline, but is also considered a leader in design algorithms and tools for low-power electronic design. Additionally, he has been recognised as one of the founding fathers of network on chip (NoC) technology.

The EDAA Lifetime Achievement Award is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the state of the art in electronic design, automation and testing of electronic systems during their career. In order to be eligible, candidates must have made innovative contributions, which had an impact on the way electronic systems are being designed.

“Giovanni De Micheli is a very productive and successful researcher with a long record of significant accomplishment and leadership. He is a pioneer in the area of design technologies for systems and circuits. IC School is extremely fortunate to have him as a faculty member,” highlights Dean James Larus. “I offer my heartfelt congratulations to him on this fantastic achievement.”
