John Vargas presents the results of our HAC project at the Science Diplomacy Week

Today, John will present the results of our project “Mapping vulnerable populations with AI” in the session “Engineering for Humanitarian Action and Global Health” of the Science Diplomacy Week. This project aims to create fine-grained population maps in several developing countries, using data derived from satellite imagery, open geospatial data, and governmental census data. Humanitarian organizations, such as the Red Cross, need population information to support humanitarian operations (e.g., vaccination campaigns). However, population data in developing countries are usually not up-to-date and coarse (e.g., at the level of provinces or counties). In collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), ETH Zurich, and the Qatar Computing Research Institute, we are developing methods to create population maps of 100 x 100 meters of spatial resolution.
