Dr. Wenlong Liao Appointed Full Professor at Southeast University

Dr. Wenlong Liao will join Southeast University, one of China's top universities (ranked #155 globally in the latest US News world university ranking), as Full Professor in 2026.
Dr. Liao, formerly a postdoctoral researcher at EPFL’s WIRE Laboratory under the supervision of Prof. Fernando Porté-Agel, is recognized for his contributions to wind power forecasting using explainable AI, deep learning, and foundation models. His research excellence has been acknowledged by multiple international recipients including the MSCA Fellow in European Union, JSPS Fellow in Japan, and DAAD AI-net Fellow in Germany. In the photo from his Southeast University presentation, he shows his work on Explainable AI in wind power forecasting, reflecting the continued influence of EPFL’s interdisciplinary research environment on his academic path.
After leaving EPFL, Dr. Liao maintains active collaboration with the WIRE Lab, and together we have co-submitted a new paper on foundation model for energy forecasting. He plans to build a research group supervising around 12 master’s and 6 PhD students, aiming to continue international cooperation in AI-driven energy forecasting and power system operation.
