Seyyedmaalek Momeni joins GEL as a post-doc to work on the SNF project entitled "micro-crack toughening of hydro-mechanically driven fractures in rocks"

Dr Seyyedmaalek Momeni holds a PhD (2019) in seismology and geophysics from the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES) in Tehran, Iran. During his PhD, Maalek spent almost four years at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, where he worked on earthquake source physics. His initial academic degree is in condensed matter physics.

Parallel to his academic studies, he has been involved in many projects related to industry. In 2011, he joined the Geological Survey of Iran, where he work on different geophysical exploration methods (active seismic, geoelectric, and geomagnetic). He brings experience on microseismic monitoring, seismic survey design, kinematic and dynamic rupture simulation, stress modelling, exploration geophysics, and seismic hazard assessment of important infrastructures (such as dams, mines, big cities).

Before joining EPFL, Maalek was a post-doc in ICTP (Trieste) where he worked on rupture kinematics and dynamics of some interesting earthquakes, using ARGO High Performance Computing facilities.

In the geo-energy laboratory of EPFL, he will work on improving the imaging of fluid-induced ruptures growth in porous media using passive and active acoustic methods.
