Dimitrios Terzis awarded the Rodolphe and Renée Haenny Prize for 2024
The Rodolphe and Renée Haenny Foundation awarded its prize to Dr. Dimitrios Terzis, a research and teaching associate at the Laboratory of Soil Mechanics in the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering at EPFL.
The Rodolphe and Renée Haenny Foundation has awarded its 2024 Prize to Dr. Dimitrios Terzis, a research and teaching associate at the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) of EPFL. This prestigious award recognizes Dr. Terzis’ significant contributions to environmental sciences, teaching, innovation, and global outreach at the intersection of materials science, bio-geo-chemistry, and civil engineering.
Dr. Terzis was selected for this honor due to his groundbreaking work in developing and characterizing bio-cements, which are crucial for environmental engineering and sustainable civil infrastructure projects. The Haenny Committee highlighted his research’s impact on protecting vital infrastructure and mitigating risks associated with extreme weather events, landslides, and soil erosion. In addition to these research achievements, Dr. Terzis’ dedication to teaching and mentoring students, and outreach efforts were also recognized by the Foundation.
Upon receiving the award, Dr. Terzis stated, “I am deeply honored to receive the 2024 Rodolphe and Renée Haenny Prize. This recognition is an immense motivation to continue pursuing my research and innovations in environmental sciences, bio-geo-chemistry, and construction materials. Thank you to the Haenny Foundation and the committee for this prestigious honor, I look forward to continuing our shared mission of advancing knowledge and inspiring the next generation of engineers.”
Established in 2001 by Mrs. Renée Haenny in memory of her late husband, Rodolphe Haenny, the Foundation aims to support students in metallurgy and materials science, as well as to honor exceptional scientists, educators, and engineers affiliated with EPFL or the University of Lausanne. The Rodolphe and Renée Haenny Prize, which includes a cash award of CHF 10’000, is awarded for highly original work in metallurgy and materials science with a fundamental and interdisciplinary approach, and for contributions to the promotion and education of students in these fields.
The Award Ceremony is expected to take place in November 2024.
Congratulations to Dr. Terzis on this well-deserved recognition!
