The Blauer Montag Lecture Series on May 6 at ZHAW featured a talk on personalized thermal sensing and smart control strategies by Prof. Khovalyg.

The Department of Architecture, Design, and Civil Engineering at Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) hosted the Spring 2024 edition of its “Blue Monday” (Blauer Montag) lecture series, centered on the theme Digital Building Practices for Sustainable Construction. This initiative aimed to deepen architectural students' knowledge of cutting-edge technologies integrating sustainability and digital innovation.

As part of the series, Prof. Khovalyg from EPFL participated in a session titled Thermal Comfort in Buildings - An Occupant-Centric Approach to Heating and Cooling.” Her presentation focused on advanced, non-intrusive personalized sensing solutions and smart climate controls powered by Machine Learning. She highlighted recent developments at the ICE lab, including technologies for detecting individuals' local thermal conditions with minimal personal data and predicting personalized human energy expenditure. These innovations were complemented by the introduction of a Reinforcement Learning-based framework for occupant-centered smart control strategies aimed at enhancing both energy efficiency and individual comfort.
