• How did you find out about the CYD Fellowships and what motivated you to apply?

I first learned about the CYD Fellowships through my supervisor, who introduced me to this exciting opportunity and encouraged me to apply. Recognizing the potential benefits and having nothing to lose, I was motivated to take a chance and submit my application.

• What was your CYD Fellowship project about?

My CYD Fellowship project, which I discovered on the CYD website, focused on conducting a security analysis of SCION. Specifically, the project involved evaluating the operational SCION network between the various CYD locations.

• What were the advantages of conducting your master thesis project at the CYD Campus?

Conducting my master thesis project at the CYD Campus offered several significant advantages. I had access to a modern, well-equipped workplace, enabling me to carry out my research efficiently. Additionally, the opportunity to interact and exchange ideas with other students and CYD employees greatly enriched my learning experience. Furthermore, the financial support provided by the fellowship was invaluable in allowing me to focus fully on my project.

• Did you as a child dream of working in cyber-defence?

As a child, I was more interested in physics and did not initially dream of working in cyber-defense.

• What is driving you to pursue research in cyber-defence?

What drives me to pursue research in cyber-defense is the opportunity to enhance security for everyone. I am motivated by the challenge of developing solutions that protect individuals and organizations from cyber threats, thereby contributing to a safer and more secure digital environment.

• What is the most important lesson you have learned in your scientific career so far?

A key lesson I have learned in my scientific career is the importance of perseverance and resilience. Scientific research often involves setbacks and failures, but maintaining a determined mindset and learning from these obstacles are crucial for overcoming difficulties and achieving meaningful progress.

• What are you most proud of in your career to date?

One of the proudest moments in my career so far was when I identified and resolved a bug in the Signal messaging protocol during the last semester. Contributing to the security of such a widely used and important communication tool was a significant achievement for me, as it demonstrated my ability to tackle complex problems and make a meaningful impact in the field of cybersecurity.

• Outside the lab, what do you enjoy doing most?

Outside the lab, I most enjoy spending quality time with my girlfriend, whether we are going on excursions or simply relaxing together. I also cherish moments spent with friends and family, as these connections bring joy and balance to my life beyond work.

• What were your expectations about the CYD Fellowships?

Since I was unfamiliar with the CYD Fellowship before my supervisor informed me about it, I did not have any specific expectations. I approached the program with an open mind, looking forward to the potential benefits and experiences it could offer.

• Could you share some tips with future applicants who are considering applying for the CYD Fellowships?

For future applicants considering the CYD Fellowships, my best advice is to take the leap and submit your application. You have nothing to lose and a great deal to gain from the experience.
