Meeting with Marilyne Andersen, a specialist in light on health

Marilyne Andersen (LIPID) was the guest of the Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS) show "CQFD" on Friday 29 May 2020.

During this interview, we discover her career and the origins of her passion for research on natural light, especially in terms of its impact on our physiological and psychological well-being. Light has indeed a major influence on the quality of our sleep, our mood, our immune system, but also on our perception of a space and what we enjoy doing in it.

Through questions focused on the psychophysiological effects of light, which, through the eye, pertain to our visual but also a different, non-visual system, Marilyne Andersen talks about priorities in terms of light hygiene, jet lag and circadian rhythms and ongoing developments in her laboratory, such as a wearable mini spectrometer to assess our exposure to natural light according to our lifestyle. She also talks about the applications of her work to architectural practice, including algorithms developed by her group over the past fifteen years to evaluate light performance in a human-centered way. A spin-off from her lab, called OCULIGHT dynamics was created specifically for this purpose to integrate these considerations into a design process and provide decision support to maximize daylight potential with regards to its beneficial effects on building occupants, or to their use of a daylit space.
