Defining and implementing an ambitious Campus Climate Plan that responds to climate issues is a unique opportunity for the EPFL community to imagine and contribute to the definition of a sustainable and exemplary campus. Three weeks of participative approach will soon begin to inform, collect suggestions and initiate the responsible transformation of the Campus by involving all its stakeholders.

Faced with the climate emergency, in November 2019 the EPFL Direction set up a Task Force in charge of establishing an ambitious Climate & Sustainability Plan for the period 2021-2030.

The aim is to integrate sustainability into all EPFL missions and to position the school as a world reference institution in terms of sustainability. In this Plan, EPFL also commits itself to respecting the Confederation's climate objectives, i.e. to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030 compared to 2006 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The Task Force is made up of 5 groups: education, research, innovation, campus and digital sobriety. Each group is responsible for proposing measures to be taken to achieve the objectives set by the Confederation but also to ambitiously integrate sustainability into its missions.

The proposed measures will serve as a roadmap for EPFL to ensure its responsible transformation and to play a role as an opinion leader in society. The EPFL Sustainability Unit is in charge of defining the steps that will enable EPFL campuses to become green and sustainable (hereafter referred to as the Campus Climate Plan), the implementation of which will require close collaboration with various internal departments.

A participatory approach to shape the future of the Campus together

Reducing the campus' carbon emissions by 50% from 2006 levels by 2030 is a major challenge that will require significant changes in both institutional operations and individual behaviour. Convinced of the need to involve the community, which will play a central role in the implementation of the Campus Climate Plan, the EPFL Sustainability Unit is organising a participatory process from 26 October to 13 November 2020. The aim of this process is to present the current status of the measures to the community and to create spaces for exchange and discussion in order to propose an ambitious final plan that has the support of the community. This participatory approach will focus on the following 9 themes: Food, Pendular Mobility, Professional Mobility, Buildings, Community, Energy, Partnerships, Purchasing and Green Labs.

How to participate?

Different types of activities are planned in order to give everyone the opportunity to participate in a stimulating and productive way. The programme includes three weeks of face-to-face and online activities, an exhibition presenting the main elements of the Campus Climate Plan, an interactive platform, conferences and thematic workshops.
