Christos Comninellis honored in the Journal of Applied Electrochemist

On the occasion of his 65th birthday and his 40 years at EPFL, the Journal of Applied Electrochemistry is honoring Professor Christos Comninellis.

During his 40-year career at EPFL (since 1971), Christo Comninellis, of the Electrochemical Engineering Group, has published over 250 scientific articles, filed 15 patents and supervised about 30 doctoral dissertations. Naturally curious and persevering, his research fields have continually expanded to, on the one hand, environmental electrochemistry – which has become his priority – but also electrocatalysis, the development of new electrodes or even fuel cells.

His biggest success in the field of applied electrochemistry remains without doubt the development of new electrodes for treating waste water. These electrodes are coated with artificial diamond boosted with boron (to make them conductive) and enable the destruction of the organic elements present in water, without any resulting pollution.

Teaching is also a key element in Christos Comninellis’ career. Appointed Professor in 1996, he has taught several generations of chemical engineers. Enthusiastic, professional and modest, he is appreciated by his students and peers alike.

Christos Comninellis will retire during this year but without giving up his research activities at EPFL.
