C. Theiler received the Young Scientist Award of the IUPAP

The Commission on Plasma Physics of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) attributed the Young Scientist Award to Dr Christian Theiler for his outstanding contribution to the understanding of plasma edge physics in fusion research devices.
One of the two Young Scientist Award of the IUPAP-2015 was attributed by the Commission on Plasma Physics to Dr Christian Theiler at the recent International Conference on Phenomena in Ionized Gases that was held in Iasi, Romania. The award was given to him ‘for pioneering work on the physics of the edge of magnetically confined plasmas and its influence on fusion performance and on the interaction between the plasma and the surrounding material walls‘.
Dr Christian Theiler obtained his master degree in physics at the ETHZ in Zurich and his Ph.D. at the Centre de Recherches en Physique des Plasmas (CRPP) of the EPFL in Lausanne. He already received a special distinction for his thesis entitled ‘Basic Investigation of Turbulent Structures and Blobs of Relevance for Magnetic Fusion Plasmas’. After two postdoctoral years at the Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he came back to Lausanne with a 'EUROfusion' fellowship to continue and widen his investigations of fusion plasmas. He also strongly contributed to the preparation and follow-up of the first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on plasma physics.
Background
The Commission on Plasma Physics (C16) was established by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics to promote the exchange of information and views among the members of the international scientific community in the general field of Plasma Physics. Its Young Scientist Award recognizes exceptional achievement in the study of plasma physics by scientists at a relatively early stage of their career.
