The conference about bioinspired materials took place from the 20th to 25th of October 2019 in the "Congressi Stefano Franscini" (ETH Zurich) at Monte Verita, Ascona (CH).
The conference organized by Prof. Esther Amstad (EPFL) and her co-organizers Eric Dufresne (ETH Zurich, CH), Silvia Vignolini (Cambridge University, UK) and Stephen Schrettl (Adolphe Merkle Institute, CH) focused on the fabrication and characterization of materials made by nature and featured examples that demonstrate how we can learn from nature to build bio-inspired materials. It provided a venue for bringing research on the characterization of natural materials and investigation of the mechanisms by which they are produced together research performed on the fabrication of biomimetic materials. Top-notch invited speakers from the field of bioinspired materials presented their latest research as well as a variety of contributed talks and posters.
A large number of SMaL members attended the conference and contributed by giving a talk (Alvaro and Huachuan) or presenting their results on a poster (Aysu, Michael, Matteo, Mathias). This conference was a great opportunity to meet some of the leading experts in the field, discuss the current results and plan project for the future.
We would like to thank all the organizers and especially Esther for organizing this inspiring conference!
