We are pleased to announce that Victoria He, PhD student at LAMD, has been awarded the Best Paper Award by the Microturbines, Turbochargers, and Small Turbomachines Committee at the ASME Turbo Expo 2025.
The awarded paper presents the development of a high-speed, high-temperature micro steam turbine designed to power syngas compression in small-scale combined heat and power (CHP) systems. Instead of relying on electric motors, which are unsuitable in high-temperature, hazardous environments, the steam turbine valorizes waste heat to drive compression, improving both efficiency and safety. The 2.8 kW cantilever turbine was designed using a combination of in-house and commercial tools and validated through advanced CFD analysis. Despite its miniature scale, the turbine achieves performance levels comparable to larger systems, marking a significant step forward in clean, decentralized energy solutions.
This recognition by ASME, the leading global conference on turbine technology, affirms the impact and technical excellence of Victoria’s research at the intersection of mechanical innovation and sustainable energy systems.
Congratulations on this outstanding achievement!
