At LQM, Berna will explore quantum spin-liquid states in geometrically frustrated magnets.

Berna Esmer earned her Master’s degree in Engineering Physics from Politecnico di Milano. Her thesis centered on tailoring the electronic properties of tungsten oxide (WO_x) thin films for neuromorphic computing, utilizing direct laser writing to manipulate oxygen vacancy distributions. She explored how these modifications influence resistance and how post-processing and capping layer affect the temporal stability of the modification, aiming to enhance in-memory computing technologies. At LQM, she will investigate quantum spin-liquid states in geometrically frustrated magnets, with a particular interest in the exotic magnetic behavior of langbeinite compounds and their potential for hosting novel quantum phases.
