The award ceremony of the 3rd edition of the "Sustainable is beautiful" student competition took place on September 25. On this occasion, the jury awarded two prizes and three special mentions among the twenty-four projects in competition, which involved more than 60 students in architecture at EPFL, sometimes associated with students from the civil engineering section at EPFL and from other Swiss universities. All the projects are exhibited from September 25 until October 4 in the Hall of the SG Building, EPFL Campus.

This 3rd edition was organized by the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST), in collaboration with the University of Lausanne Building Service (Unibat) and with the support of the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA). During the ceremony, Mr. Etienne Marclay, Vice Presidency for Human Resources and Operations of EPFL, and Mr. Benoît Frund, Vice-Rector for "Sustainability and Campus" of UNIL, emphasized the innovative and exemplary nature of the approach, as well as the interest of this type of collaboration for the entire academic community.

This third edition aimed at designing a new training area, in addition to the University Sports Center's current offer, integrating the principles of sustainable construction. The program of this "Smart Training" Pavilion corresponds to a total surface area of approximately 600 m2, including mainly areas dedicated to connected bodybuilding and virtual training, but also research and sports medicine consulting offices. Driven by a will to promote health and well-being among the entire academic community, the planned project site is located between the two sports halls of the Dorigny Sports Center.

The architectural approach intended an appropriate adequacy of the means employed, on mastering constructive processes from vision to demolition and on a creative use of materials with low energy, environmental and economic impact. The contest thus offers students the opportunity not only to imagine the architectural design from a conceptual point of view, but also to experience its constructive reality.

Chaired by Prof. Emmanuel Rey, the jury consisted of representatives of UNIL, EPFL and Canton de Vaud, as well as sustainability experts, heads of student associations and architects of professional practice. The jury had a total amount of CHF 9'000.– to be awarded. At the end of the evaluation process, the jury decided to award two prizes and three special mentions.

The first prize, corresponding to 4'500.– CHF, has been awarded to the project proposed by participants Martin Handley, Yann Junod and Nicola Schürch.

The second prize, corresponding to 3'000.– CHF, has been awarded to the project proposed by students Grégory Dos Santos, Sébastien Lorenzini and Mui Sadler.

Three special mentions, corresponding each to 500.– CHF, have been awarded to the project proposed respectively by the team of Julien Friedli, Martin Järmann, Hugo Pachoud and Jérémy Prongué, the team of Yannick Claessens, Christophe Pittet, Mattia Pretolani and Sophie Tschumy and the team of Ang Li and Shengyu Shi.

This competition is conceived as the first step of the process supposed to lead to the effective realization of the "Smart Training" Pavilion. The winning team will be involved from the project development to its implementation phase, in collaboration with the different partners, which will be appointed for that purpose.
