Architectural competition for students

Sustainable is Beautiful © EPFL / LAST
After two successful experiences, the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST) organizes a new competition for students in architecture, called "Sustainable is beautiful", in collaboration with UNIL Building Service (Unibat) and with the support of SIA Vaud.
While the previous edition was dedicated to the design of a new Bike Point, currently under construction on the EPFL campus, this new edition aims at designing a new training area, in addition to the University Sports Center current offer.
The program of this Smart Training Pavilion corresponds to a total surface area of approximately 600 m2, mainly comprising areas dedicated to connected bodybuilding and virtual training, but also research and sports medicine consulting offices.
As part of a will to promote health and well-being among the entire academic community, the planned location for the project is between the two sports halls of the Dorigny Sports Center on the UNIL campus.
The architectural approach will be based in particular on searching for an appropriate adequacy of the means employed, on mastering constructive processes from vision to demolition and on a creative use of materials with low energy, environmental and economic impact. The contest will thus offer students the opportunity not only to imagine the architectural design from a conceptual point of view, but also to experience its constructive reality.
Chaired by Prof. Emmanuel Rey, the jury consists of representatives of UNIL, EPFL and Canton de Vaud, as well as sustainability experts, heads of student associations and architects of professional practice. The jury will have a total amount of CHF 9'000.- to be awarded to the winning project and to any mentions.
This competition is conceived as the first step of the process supposed to lead to the effective realization of the Smart Training Pavilion. The winning team will be involved from the project development to its implementation phase, in collaboration with the partners, which will be appointed for that purpose.
