The SNSF grant also sponsors a Visiting Scholar program at Columbia University

André Patrão has received a two-year SNSF Postdoc Mobility grant for the project Interactions between architecture and philosophy: eight case-studies from the twenties to today, an unprecedented comprehensive historical investigation of the contemporary relation between architecture and philosophy, from its antecedents in the early 20th century, across its heyday between the 60’s and 90’s, up to current developments. After working on particular instances of this phenomenon at the EPFL's ACHT lab, he will continue his research at Yale University as a Postdoctoral Fellow, and simultaneously at Columbia University as a Visiting Scholar, under Professors Joan Ockman and Mary McLeod.

André first arrived at the lab of Architecture, Criticism, History, and Theory in 2016 to pursue his doctoral studies under the supervision of Professor Christophe van Gerrewey. He successfully defended his thesis in early 2020, and worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher ever since.

During these years he presented his work at several international conferences, published papers and essays – namely in Lingua,Architecture Philosophy, and Drawing Matter –, accompanied multiple award-winning Master Projects, and gave lectures, moderated debates, or took part in critiques not only at the EPFL but also at ISCTE, HEPIA, Virginia Tech, Columbia University, and for Smithsonian Associates. André was also elected PhD Student Representative for the School of Architecture and Sciences of the City (2018-2019). Recently, he organized the 5th Biennial Conference of the International Society for the Philosophy of Architecture, dedicated to the topic of “Public Space – the Real and the Ideal” (2021), in collaboration with Dr. Christoph Baumberger and Dr. Hans Teerds from ETH Zürich.

The members of ACHT thank André for his role at the lab for the past five years and a half, and wish him the very best in this new endeavors.
