A new professor and two faculty promotions.

In the nomination meeting of December 5th and 6th, the ETH Board has appointed three professors at the School of Basic Sciences.
Prof. Jan Hesthaven has been appointed Full Professor as of July 1st 2013, Professor Xile Hu has been promoted to Associate Professor and Professor Tobias Kippenberg promoted to Full Professor.

Appointments at the School of Basic Sciences.

Professor Jan Hesthaven, currently Full Professor at Brown University, Providence (Rhode Island, USA), as Full Professor of Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation. Jan Hesthaven is an experienced mathematician of international renown. He attaches equal importance to academic work on subjects such as numerical algorithms and to its practical implementation in applied physics and computer sciences. Jan Hesthaven will significantly enhance the EPFL’s standing. In addition to establishing a key area in applied mathematics and physics, his interdisciplinary expertise will provide fresh impetus in teaching and research in related fields.

Professor Xile Hu, currently Tenure Track Assistant Professor at EPFL, as Associate Professor of Inorganic Chemistry. In just a few years, Xile Hu’s research work in the areas of catalysis and bioinorganic chemistry has established him as a world leader in his field. In the last few years he has built up the Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis and Catalysis at EPFL. He and his team have made important findings in energy conversion and storage. With his creative methods and innovative strength, Xile Hu is a valued researcher and teacher at EPFL.

Professor Tobias Kippenberg, currently Associate Professor at EPFL, as Full Professor of Physics and Electronics. Tobias Kippenberg already has an impressive academic career behind him. He is acknowledged internationally as one of the world's most promising physicists. Areas covered by his research work include optomechanics and optical frequencies. As well as receiving various prestigious academic awards in the last few years, Tobias Kippenberg has also secured significant funding. His appointment as a full professor strengthens EPFL’s leading international position in physics research.
