Worldwide Representation at Tech4Dev 2018

Our flagship event, the UNESCO International Conference on Technologies for Development took place from June 27-29 2018 at the Swiss Tech Convention Center, gathering 450 attendees from over 70 countries and brought into focus the value of technological innovation in generating inclusive and sustainable social and economic development in the Global South.

Research: Medical X-ray imaging made affordable

The GlobalDiagnostiX consortium unveiled its second prototype on 29 October 2018 at an event that included Federal Councillor Johann N. Schneider-Ammann.

RESCIF Network: Change of Presidency

During a meeting of the Presidents of the Network of Excellence in Engineering Sciences of the French-speaking Community (RESCIF) held on 19 July 2018 in Lausanne, EPFL handed RESCIF’s Presidency and General Secretariat over to INP-HB Yamoussoukro in the Ivory Coast.

Medical X-ray imaging made affordable

— The GlobalDiagnostiX X-ray system is about to go into production. This robust machine – initially designed for the challenging conditions of countries in the Global South – has also turned out to be an attractive solution for industrialized nations owing to its low cost. The GlobalDiagnostiX consortium unveiled its second prototype on 29 October at an event that included Federal Councillor Johann N. Schneider-Ammann.

Off to Colombia to purify water and develop eco-friendly showers

— Two EPFL Master’s students in environmental sciences and engineering have headed to Colombia to carry out their internships. They’ll spend four months there working on two separate projects. You can follow their progress on the EPFL expedition blog, EPFL Out There.

Preserving Chile's water with solar-powered robots

— EPFL researchers have developed floating, solar-powered robots to help protect Chile’s water reservoirs. These low-cost robots can be assembled together in a variety of ways on the water surface to prevent the water from evaporating – thereby preserving a precious resource in this arid country and one that’s crucial to its biggest industry: winemaking.

CHF 14 million of funding for all-terrain radiology

— Pristem SA, a company spun off from EPFL’s EssentialTech program, has raised CHF 14 million of new capital in a first round. The funding will enable it to put its prototype of a robust digital radiology system, appropriate for both industrialized and low income countries, into full-scale production.

Showerloop lets you take a full shower with just 10 liters of water

— Summer series. Students' project (2/8) - Thanks to funding from EPFL Cooperation & Development Center, EPFL students will test three prototypes of their new eco-friendly shower at a university campus in Colombia this fall. Once back in Switzerland, they plan to install their device right here at EPFL.

NUMED 2018, a landmark first edition!

— On June 21-22, 2018 took place the first edition of Numed, an international conference organised by the Université Virtuelle du Sénégal (UVS), the École Supérieure Polytechnique de Dakar (ESP), the Université Gaston Berger (UGB) de Saint-Louis and the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, in collaboration with the Network of Excellence in Engineering Sciences of the French-speaking Community (RESCIF) - a consortium dedicated to innovation and development. The event took place place in UCAD's (Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar) auditorium and in UVS's Espaces Numériques Ouverts (ENO) or 'open digital spaces'. The theme were: “Digital-era learning in higher education in Francophone Africa: a look at where we are today, the challenges ahead and tomorrow’s prospects .”
