The Forschungsmonitoring rankings in Business Administration and Economics established by the Swiss Economic Institute (KOF) at ETH Zurich has listed 8 professors of the College of Management of Technology among the top 300 researchers. Given the size of the College, these results reflect the excellent research conducted by our faculty members.

The results rank all scientists in business administration or economics in the German speaking countries Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and researchers who are born in these countries. The team behind the index proposes several types of ranking (e.g., lifetime achievement, scholars under 40, performance in the last five years) as well as several criteria for measuring the ‘quality’ of journals in which researchers have published.

What follows is a brief overview of the rankings of our CDM professors according to the main ranking criteria (Scimago Journal Ranking, top journals receive a weight of 1), in alphabetical order.

  • Prof. Gaétan de Rassenfosse is listed among the top 5% of Business Administration scholars in the last five years, the top 5% under 40 years old (number 20 overall) and top 10% considering lifetime publication record.
  • Prof. Rüdiger Fahlenbrach is listed among the top 10% of Business Administration scholars in the last five years, and the top 5% considering lifetime publication record.
  • Prof. Damir Filipovic is listed among the top 5% of Economics scholars in the last five years, and the top 5% considering lifetime publication record.
  • Prof. Julien Hugonnier is listed among the top 10% of Economics scholars in the last five years, and the top 10% considering lifetime publication record.
  • Prof. Luisa Lambertini is listed among the top 10% of Economics scholars considering lifetime publication record.
  • Prof. Semyon Malamud is listed among the top 10% of Economics scholars in the last five years and top 10% considering lifetime publication record.
  • Prof. Ralf Seifert is listed among the top 10% of Business Administration in the last five years and the top 10% considering lifetime publication record.
  • Prof. Christopher Tucci is listed among the top 5% of Business Administration scholars considering lifetime publication record.

Despite the very good performance of CDM researchers, such rankings must be interpreted cautiously. Prof. de Rassenfosse explains: "These rankings only capture one dimension of the production function of university professors, namely the research component—admittedly an essential element for a research-oriented university such as EPFL. But other CDM professors excel in different dimensions such as engagement with policy and industry. Regarding the nitty-gritty of the ranking, the team did a great job at proposing various weighting schemes for journal quality, such that the ranking is quite robust to definitional issues. However, one must not forget that the ranking considers the quality of journals and not the quality or ‘impact’ of individual papers. They are thus only a rough indication of research performance. Besides, one can also question the completeness of the ranking—I would have expected more CDM professors to be listed.

Despite these caveats, we should not hide our pleasure. Congratulations to our professors!
