The Structural Xploration Lab at IASS 2019
7-10 Octobre 2019, Barcelona, Spain
The Structural Xploration Lab joined the 60th-Anniversary symposium of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS), in Barcelona, from to 2019. Here a summary of its contributions:
- The team presented its trans-typological pavilion "3-to-1";
- Jan Brütting, PhD candidate in the lab, was awarded a 2019 IASS Hangai Prize for his paper "Form Follows Availability - Designing Structures through Reuse";
- Corentin Fivet, head of the lab, co-organized two sessions, one as co-chair of the Working-Group 18 on "Environmentally-Compatible Structures" together with Prof. Olivier Baverel (ParisTech), and another as co-chair of the study group on Graphical Methods (part of the Working-Group 15 on Structural Morphology) together with Prof. M.Akbarzadeh (UPENN);
- Ioannis Mirtsopoulos introduced his "Evolutionary generation of spatial structures through force-based grammar", co-authored with Corentin Fivet;
- Alex Muresan showcased the "Versatile modular structural system for buildings" recently developed at SXL, co-authored with Jan Brütting, Dario Redaelli (HEIA-FR), and Corentin Fivet;
- Jan Brütting also presented his latest research on Optimum Frame Design with Reused Stock Elements, co-authored with Mattias Schevenels (KULeuven), Gennaro Senatore (IMAC, EPFL), and Corentin Fivet;
- Nicolas Montagne presented his "Experimental investigation of beams under coupled bending and torsion", carried out at ParisTech;
- The lab also co-authored a paper on analytical, experimental, and numerical approaches for the traditional Japanese Nuki joint with MIT and ARUP;
