The Highest Honor in Information and Communication Theory

Professor Rüdiger Urbanke has been recognized by the IEEE for exceptional achievements to the field and inspiring teaching.
In recognition of his ‘consistent and profound contributions to the field of information theory’, the IEEE Information Theory Society has announced IC Dean, Professor Rüdiger Urbanke, the recipient of the 2023 Claude E. Shannon award.
This prize, one of the most prestigious in computer science, covers technical contributions at the intersection of mathematics, communication engineering, and theoretical computer science. Professor Urbanke will deliver his Shannon Lecture at the International Symposium on Information Theory in Taiwan in June, 2023.
The IEEE Board of Directors, has also announced that Professor Urbanke has won the 2023 IEEE Leon K. Kirchmayer Graduate Teaching Award, for the inspirational teaching of graduate students, contributions to graduate education, empowering students and mentorship that have advanced the world of wireless and engineering communication.
“I am honored and humbled to be recognized by the IEEE through both of these awards. The Graduate Teaching Award is especially rewarding as it also shines a light on the wonderful PhD students I have had the opportunity to work with over the course of my career. And I have the impression they are getting smarter by the year – or perhaps I just get older!” said Professor Urbanke.
