Startup Company Rheon Medical Wins 2020 Swiss Medtech Award

Medtech startup company Rheon Medical, spun out of the EPFL's Laboratory of Hemodynamics and Cardiovascular Technology (Stergiopulos Lab), has won the annual Swiss Medtch Award for 2020, for a device poised to revolutionize the treatment of glaucoma.
Quoting from Swiss Medtech official press release:
"On the occasion of Swiss Medtech Day – with 500 participants, the most important annual event for the Swiss medical technology industry – two start-ups from western Switzerland, Rheon Medical and Coat-X, were presented with the Swiss Medtech Award worth CHF 50,000. The eyeWatch system from Rheon Medical is currently revolutionising the treatment of glaucoma and has already been successfully implanted in more than 150 patients. The coating technology from Coat-X also played a central role in the product development."
Glaucoma, one of the leading cause of blindness, affects some 70 million people worldwide. It is caused by high intraocular pressure, which results in irreversible damage to the optic nerve and, in the absence of proper treatment, to loss of eyesight.
Rheon Medical's innovative eyeWatch system, the first non-invasively adjustable glaucoma drainage implant, is a potential game changer in that it allows tight control of the patient's intraocular pressure.
Rheon Medical is a startup company spun out of the Stergiopulos Lab (Laboratory of Hemodynamics and Cardiovascular Technology - LHTC) in EPFL's Institute of Bioengineering (School of Engineering).
