September 27-28, 2018 - FATUK, Faculty of Architecture TU Kaiserslautern

Jan Brütting (Structural Xploration Lab) is participating at the first edition of the international conference RCA2018 – Research Culture in Architecture. The conference aims to discuss topics and methods in architectural research, focusing on their cross-disciplinary interrelations and their relevance to the design process itself.

Jan is presenting the joint research “Reconsidering traditional timber joinery for sustainable structures” carried out between ARUP, San Francisco and the Structural Xploration Lab. This contribution shows historical developments of wood only connections, their simulation with state-of-the-art FEA technology as well as their potential use for fast assembled and reconfigurable sustainable structures.

In addition, Jan Brütting is part of the conference poster session to present his PhD research on “Reuse in Architecture and Structural Design”. The presented work includes the study of historical and contemporary projects involving structural element reuse as well as the introduction to newly developed computational tools facilitating the design of structures with reused elements.
