Professors Michael Grätzel and Mohammad K. Nazeeruddin at EPFL have been included in the Web of Science’s top 10 Highly Cited Researchers list. Professor Grätzel occupies the first place on the list and is especially noted for appearing in four different research fields.

The Web of Science (WoS) is a widely used online service that provides a comprehensive citation search for researchers across the world. WoS is maintained by Clarivate Analytics, an independent analytics company that once formed the Intellectual Property and Science business of Thomson Reuters.

Since 2014, Clarivate has produced an annual Highly Cited Researchers list of scientists whose publications the previous 10 years contain a notable number of Highly Cited Papers. These are papers that have amassed sufficient citations to place them among the top 1% most cited for their year of publication in one of 21 main subject fields. The list itself feeds into Clarivate’s Essential Science Indicators, a database of emerging science trends in various fields of research used by policymakers, government agencies, universities, corporations, recruiters, the press and others.

This year, EPFL Professors Michael Grätzel and Mohammad K. Nazeeruddin have made the top 10 Highly Cite Researchers in the field of Materials Science. Of special note is that Professor Grätzel who is number one on the list has authored Highly Cited Papers in four distinct categories: “exemplifying cross-field impact in four Essential Science Indicators fields: Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, and Physics.”

The 2017 Highly Cited Researchers list also includes the following EPFL researchers:

  • Ali H. Sayed, Dean of the School of Engineering (STI)
