Doctoral student Pierre-Arnaud Aeberhard has been awarded an MD-PhD Leenaards fellowship. The award will fund his three-year thesis, conducted between the Laboratory of Biomechanical Orthopedics (LBO) of EPFL’s School of Engineering (STI), and the Service of Plastic and Hand Surgery of the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV).

The MD-PhD Leenards fellowships support medical graduates who want to pursue a PhD in basic medical science in order to become clinical scientists.

Aeberhard completed his medical studies at the Geneva University (UNIGE) in 2016. His current doctoral research focuses on tissue engineering for hand surgery. His project involves the development and validation of extracellular matrices, produced from horse tendons that have been decellularized and then re-cellularised with progenitor cells from a cell bank. In parallel, Aeberhard wants to launch clinical studies to improve the conservative and surgical management of flexor and extensor tendon injuries of the hand.
