The 12th edition of Open Access Week is being held from October 21 to 27, 2019. This international event aims to highlight Open Access (OA) practices and raise awareness of Open Access among the scientific communities and society.

For more than 15 years, EPFL has been committed to Open Access. After signing the Berlin Declaration in 2013, EPFL signed the DORA (Declaration on Research Assessment) declaration in January 2017, which recognizes the need to improve the evaluation of research results.

In February 2019, EPFL adopted its institutional Open Access policy, which encourages EPFL researchers to make research results freely accessible. EPFL authors are therefore asked to follow the Green OA way, by depositing their publications in Infoscience, the EPFL institutional repository, at the latest 6 months after the publication in a scientific journal. Authors can also publish directly in Open Access (Gold OA way), a publication model whose costs are, under certain conditions, financially supported by the Library. When authors opt for the Green model, an amendment to the publication contract is also proposed to negotiate a maximum 6-month embargo period with certain publishers, allowing the authors to comply with their institutional policy, as well as with main funders' requirements (SNSF, ERC, etc.). Thus, authors retain as many rights as possible to their publications.

The implementation of this OA policy is part of a constantly changing international landscape and follows the Swiss national strategy framework on Open Access, which aims to achieve 100% OA for publicly funded publications by 2024, and the OA requirements of the main funders.

In addition to the Open Access issues, the EPFL Library offers researchers publication support services and expertise in publication models, copyright, licensing and other topics related to the publication cycle. The Training and Research Data Management team complement the support offered to researchers.

During this special week, "I support Open Access" buttons are available free of charge at the Library desk! More information on Open Access Week can be found at www.openaccessweek.org. You can share your tweets related to the OA week and more broadly with the OA using the official #OAWeek hashtag.
