NRP 77 "Digital Transformation" 2nd Call is open

CHF 5.4M available for 8 new projects on “Education, learning and digital change” and “Ethics, trustworthiness and governance”.

The National Research Programmes (NRPs) of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) are a means of generating and conducting coordinated research projects that pursue a common goal. NRP 77 “Digital transformation” aims to generate knowledge about the opportunities, risks, challenges and solutions that digitalisation creates for society. A 1st call was launched in 2018 with 37 projects funded.

To bridge some research gaps, NRP 77 has launched a 2nd call for proposals with a budget of CHF 5.4M to fund around 8 new projects. Interdisciplinary projects and collaborations with other NRP 77 projects are strongly encouraged.

This call is open to projects on the following topics:

Module 1 on “Education, learning and digital change” (CHF 1.8M for 2-3 grants):

  • Individuals in the second half of their lives, and from different educational backgrounds;
  • Individuals with disabilities and with different educational backgrounds;
  • Impact of digitalisation on the education system.

Module 2 on “Ethics, trustworthiness and governance” (CHF 3.6M for 5-6 grants):

  • Impact of digitalisation on the public sphere and/or journalism;
  • Governance and legal framework of digital technologies.

Module 3 has been discontinued.

Applicants must comply with the SNSF Project Funding eligibility rules (see EPFL Toolkit for SNSF Project Funding). Collaborations with researchers abroad is accepted in justified cases.

Funding and duration: indicatively CHF 300’000-600’000 for max. 48 months.

Timeline of the call:

  • Deadline for Letters of Intent: 20 February 2020
  • Invitation to submit a full proposal: March 2020
  • Deadline for Full Proposals: 20 April 2020 at 17:00 CET
  • Decision: August 2020
  • Start of the project: September-December 2020
