Efficient use of accessibility in microRNA target prediction.

The group of Prof. Jiří Vaníček (LCPT – Laboratory of Theoretical Physical Chemistry) proposed a simple and efficient algorithm to predict microRNA target genes, based on the overrepresentation of partially accessible binding sites in the target 3'UTRs. Among the top five hundred predictions, this algorithm finds at least five times more validated targets in Drosophila melanogaster than other currently available methods. The paper published in Nucleic Acids Research was selected among the Featured Articles, representing the top 5% of NAR papers in terms of originality, significance and scientific excellence.
