Michael Unser, head of the Biomedical Imaging Group in the School of Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2025 Norbert Wiener Society Award by the IEEE Signal Processing Society.

Michael Unser, who is also academic director of EPFL's Center for Imaging, was selected to receive the prestigious prize for "contributions and leadership to the theory and practice of signal processing and biomedical imaging".

The Norbert Wiener Award is the IEEE Signal Processing Society's highest honor. It recognizes outstanding technical contributions in a field within the scope of the society and outstanding leadership within that field. Unser will receive the honor at the 2026 flagship ICASSP (International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, & Signal Processing) Conference in Barcelona, Spain.

Each year, the IEEE Signal Processing Society presents the Norbert Wiener Award to recognize a member for technical contributions in the field of signal processing. The winner is judged on the basis of publications, patents, books, lectures, etc. Each winner of the Norbert Wiener Society Award is also required to present a lecture at ICASSP.
