Dr Carolina Giorgetti focuses her research on the mechanics of brittle faulting through the integration of structural geology and experimental rock mechanics.

During her PhD thesis, Carolina has investigated phyllosilicates-bearing faults and the role of pre-existing planes of weakness in brittle deformation of rocks at different scales, from the mesoscale of foliation and sedimentary layering to the crustal scale of pre-existing faults.

Dr Giorgetti has joined the LEMR supported by the EDGAR project (fracturE Design for GeothermAl Reservoir). In the framework of the project, she will study the reactivation of pre-existing faults and fractures as a function of their orientation, that is still mechanically not well constrained. In addition, she will work on the understanding of the reactivation potential of faults and fractures during exploitation of deep geothermal reservoirs, a research topic of strong societal impact.
