Professor Lyesse Laloui will deliver a Keynote lecture entitled “Clay barriers in nuclear waste repositories” at the 4th European conference on unsaturated soils “E-UNSAT 2020 – Unsaturated Horizons” which will be held online from 19 to 21 October 2020.

Prof. Laloui will present important contributions of his group to this subject over the last decades, ranging from the fundamental characterisation of the complex behaviour of bentonite clays, to advanced numerical models of both laboratory tests and field scale tests. At present the EPFL’s group is active in the BEACON project, which gathers together 25 partners from 10 European countries with the aim of further developing predictive tools for clay barriers in nuclear waste disposal.

More generally, the conference will include thematic sessions on Climate Stresses, Environmental Geotechnics, Energy Geotechnics, From Micro to Macro, and general topics related to unsaturated soils and rock mechanics. New topics will be also addressed, such as Nano-Micro Technology, Bio-Inspired Technology and Powder-Grain Technology.
