Multi-component particle-size segregation in shallow granular avalanches.

Volume 678 of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics displays one picture coming from the paper by Nico Gray and Christophe Ancey (LHE - Environmental Hydraulics Laboratory). This article intitled Multi-component particle-size segregation in shallow granular avalanches presents a theoretical model of particle segregation that explains how grain sorting develops in poorly sorted granular materials. The theory can be used to explain the formation of bouldery fronts and levees, which are essential to understanding the dynamics of natural granular flows such as snow avalanches and debris flows.
