Pierre von Meiss, an ENAC honorary professor who taught architectural design and theory for over 30 years at EPFL, has passed away.

Pierre von Meiss taught architectural design and theory for over thirty years at our school, helping to establish ENAC’s solid international reputation. He spearheaded a pioneering initiative to bring in visiting professors, and under his leadership, many famous architects taught in our school – often before they made a name for themselves internationally.

Professor von Meiss enjoyed studying the lasting elements of architecture as well as cityscapes and landscapes. This research fed into his teaching, lectures and publications. His book Elements of Architecture: From Form to Place (EPFL Press) has become standard reading in many universities around the world.

His expertise in teaching methods, program design and policy development made him an esteemed consultant for universities and international organizations, especially in the area of accreditation. As one example of this, he played a pivotal role in founding the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE).
