EPFL mathematician wins ECCOMAS award

Diane Sylvie Guignard, who received her PhD in Mathematics at EPFL, has been awarded the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) award for Best PhD Thesis in 2016.
Founded in 1993, ECCOMAS is a scientific organization that brings together European associations who are interested in the development and applications of computational methods in science and technology. These include Solid and Structural Mechanics, Fluid Dynamics, Acoustics, Electromagnetics, Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, and Scientific Computing.
Each year, ECCOMAS awards the two best PhD theses in the field of Computational Methods in Applied Sciences and Engineering. The candidates are young scientists who have recently completed a PhD thesis.
This year, one of the two winners is Diane Sylvie Guignard, who received her PhD under Professors Fabio Nobile and Marco Picasso at EPFL. Her winning thesis is titled "A posteriori error estimation for partial differential equations with random input data" and was selected out of a total of 18 nominations.
Guignard is a now a visiting scholar with Texas A&M University, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
The award was given during the 4th ECCOMAS Young Investigators Conference (YIC2017), which took place between 13-15 September 2017 at the Politecnico di Milano (Italy).
