Stability is currently the biggest challenge for the implementation of the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), which enables CO2 conversion into useful chemicals while storing renewable energy.
In this perspective, we join forces with Prof. Burdyny group in TU Delft and connect an atomistic to a system level view on copper instability in CO2RR, being copper the most promising catalyst to convert CO2 into higher hydrocarbons and alcohols. After presenting the current state of the art, we discuss the open questions along with inviting the community to report failures and investigate the reasons behind it at different length scales and time scales to make progress.
